Smith sentenced to 70 years

Marshall Anthony (Tony) Smith, 34, of Newton County, was sentenced to 70 years in prison after being found guilty of injury to a child Friday, Nov. 17. According to court records, Smith was convicted of immersing a threeyear old child's feet in hot grease leading to third degree burns on his feet May 11.

Smith chose to have a jury determine his guilt,

and in addition, to set his punishment should he be found guilty of the crime.

Smith had been indicted by a Newton County Grand Jury May 30.

Visiting District Judge David Walker of Lufkin

presided over the trial and Smith was represented by Kevin Dutton of Jasper while the state's case was presented by Criminal District Attorney A.W. Davis Jr. and Assistant CDA Misti Weeks Spacek
