Senators against minimum wage I am writing concerning a very important issue. I recently contacted both Texas U.S. Senators concerning minimum wage. The response I received was very discouraging. I wrote why I felt an increase was needed for minimum wage workers. The response I received from both Senators was: "I understand the concerns that many Americans have about the economy and the difficulties confronting low-wage workers. While increasing the minimum wage may be well-intentioned, I do not believe it would be a wise decision. Such an increase would further the financial burden on businesses and ultimately translate into higher product prices and layoffs. These consequences would disproportionately hurt low-wage workers." According to our Senators, raising the wage of the worker would devastate our business. Why are a lot of businesses showing record income? And are paying executives record wages? when the price of gas, electricity and food are steadily increasing. Congress has continued to receive a wage increase. Why cannot the convenience store worker, the laborer and the fast order cook receive a wage increase? Looks like you would equalize the wages of your upper end workers with the lower wage workers. It has been proven the minimum wage worker is way below the poverty level. Why would a person get up every morning, work well into the night, only to struggle daily just to put a roof over their families' head, to clothe their children for school or put food on the table, when most government help programs will not help unless you are totally broke. Someone will eventually have to stop thinking about big business and start thinking about the struggling American. The single mom who cannot pay for her bills much less make gas money to keep going to work, just to struggle to buy clothes, put food on the table. Or the dad who pulls his hair because he works two jobs just to make it and gets asked by his kids, "Dad, when can you take time for me?" So, thanks Senators for all your concern. While you get paid more, live in your fine homes, drive your nice cars and love life, the people who struggle to make it and families fall apart and the heartbeat of America, the American families fight to not become extinct |
