Peafield Gallery winter show highlights retired teacher's skill at potter's wheel

The Peafield Pottery Gallery will be open to the public for their winter show Saturday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Local artist Sherry Barger only holds two showings a year. She is a retired art teacher who taught in Jasper, Burkeville and Woodville.

Originally from Houston, she and husband Rod (retiring Precinct 2 commissioner Rod Barger) moved to Jasper in 1978 and began Peafield Gallery as a hobby.

Barger is known for her large flower sculptures, tiled mirrors, horsehair vases and raku pots. She frequently uses nature for inspiration in sea shell designs, grape or mushroom motifs, and flowing freeform vases. Her vivid glazes come from various firing techniques.

To find the gallery, take FM 777 south from Jasper airport to CR 317 and then follow the Peafield Pottery signs, or call 384-4046 for additional directions.
