NARFE meeting

The Silsbee-Jasper Chapter #1319 of the National Association of Retired and Current Federal Employees will meet today, Dec. 13, at Catfish Cabin on U.S. Highway 96 North at 11 a.m. After a Christmas program, each person will participate in a gift exchange. Members are asked to bring canned goods for Jasper Cares and a toy for Toys for Tots.

Blood drive

Dickerson Memorial Hospital will host a blood drive Wednesday, Dec. 13 from noon to 4 p.m. in the LifeShare bus. Donors must present identification.

Bluebonnet meeting

The Bluebonnet Garden Club will meet Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m. for gift exchange and Christmas dinner at the home of Beth Waxman.

Scout garage sale

The Cub Scouts of Jasper’s Pack 632 will host their second garage sale Saturday, Dec. 16. The indoor garage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Boy Scout’s building on Second Street, across from Jasper Junior High.

Prayer breakfast

The United Methodist Men and the Burkeville Ministerial Alliance will hold their monthly community prayer breakfast Tuesday, Dec. 19, 8 a.m. at the Burkeville United Methodist Church. Misti Weeks, Newton County’s newly elected district attorney, will be guest speaker.

Monthly recycling

Texas Beautiful announced that every third weekend recycle bins will be available at Brookshire Brothers parking lot for things like plastic and steel. Area coordinator Patty Shaw says that newspapers can be recycled weekdays by dropping them off at the city transfer station on Hi Truett Road off U. S. Highway 190 North. Proceeds from newspaper recycling benefit the Jasper Library.

Cancer control program

Jasper-Newton County Public Health District’s breast and cervical cancer control program offers women free breast exams, mammography and pap smear. Women with limited income, who have no insurance, Medicaid or Medicare are eligible. Women should be aged 50-64. Those qualifying for this program should call the Jasper office at 384-6829; Newton office at 379-5291; Kirbyville office at 423-6133 or the Buna office at 994-5921, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Regional arts

East Texas Regional Art Center, located at the corner of Austin and Crockett streets in Jasper features rotating exhibits from national, regional and local artists. Art classes and workshops are available. The art league meets the first Monday of each month and is open to the public. For more information call 384- 2404 or 489-9460. The center

is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturdays by appointment.

4-H activities

Jasper Community 4-H and Cloverbud kids meet the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m., at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Jasper. For more information on 4-H call Nicole Hamilton at 384-7866; for Cloverbud Kids call Betty Morton at 384-2604 or Charla James at 384-7866. 4- H shooting sports group meets the fourth Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Junior Livestock barn;call Jimmy or Dru Miller at 384-9900.

Alzheimer’s support

The Alzheimer’s caregiver support group will meet the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at Dickerson Memorial Hospital. There will be guest speakers and refreshments. For more information call Lela at 698-9308 or Marty at 383-2388.

Humane Society donations

The Jasper Lakes Area Human Society has published a wish list for donations that includes blankets, towels, dog and cat food, cat litter, collars, copy paper and postage stamps. For more information call 384- 8251 or email jar@jas.net.

Hospice Thrift Store

Lakes Area Hospice Thrift Store is seeking donations for resale. The Thrift Store relocated after Hurricane Rita and is at 149 Water St., phone 383-1800. Donations are tax deductible.
