Women’s Civic Club takes on new project

“Hold onto your pantyhose,” Marilyn Ratcliff told members of the Woman’s Civic Club at the Christmas meeting last week.

The Pantyhose Project is just one of a myriad of efforts spearheaded by the Woman’s Civic Club of Jasper. Ratcliff sends pantyhose to M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, where they custom make pillows that contour to patients’ bodies, whatever size is needed to support a limb or a back that aches.

The pantyhose filling stands up to washing in heavy-duty hospital chemicals and dries almost instantly.

“Bring all you can,” Ratcliff said, “and I will arrange to ship them to the hospital.”

Club members also made 20 Christmas baskets and donated them and $100 check to Jasper SHARE, the food pantry for those in need.

Club plans for 2007 include supporting the Jasper Beautiful recycling campaign, the library, and a Kentucky Derby-style fundraiser, according to president Darlene Nolen.

Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month in the Woman’s Civic Club building across from the Wesley Center.
