Faces & Places Rose Society The Lakes Area Rose Society will have their monthly meeting Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Jasper City Council room at 465 S. Main in Jasper. Texas Rose Rustlers will be guest speakers. Their focus is on old rose species with colorful histories. For more information call 423-4756. Woman's Civic Club The Jasper County Woman's Civic Club will meet Jan. 11 at 11:30 a.m. at 156 W. Milam St. Clifton Neal, author of Hounded: Truman's Story, will be guest speaker. Rayburn Bloomers The Rayburn Bloomers Garden Club will met Jan. 11 at the Lake Rayburn United Methodist Church. Ruth Olson and Jan Wade will speak on gardening with disabilities. The club's highway clean-up will be Jan. 18 at 9 a.m. Burkeville benefit The Burkeville Chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America will hold a skate-along at the Skating Palace in Jasper Jan. 15 to raise money for the Texas Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. All area students who raise at least $10 can skate for two hours; for at least $35 they also receive a t-shirt. The students who raise the most money receive a game boy for first place, a bicycle for second and a portable boom box for third. For more information call Diane Brooks at 565-4338. Cancer benefit Young Years Day Care on West Houston Street will host a benefit garage sale Saturday, Feb. 10 (rain date Feb. 17) from 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. Proceeds go to assist George Block in his battle with cancer. Monthly recycling Texas Beautiful announced that every third weekend recycle bins will be available at the southeast corner of the Community Church parking lot for things like plastic and steel. Area coordinator Patty Shaw says newspapers can be recycled any weekday by dropping them off at the city transfer station on Hi Truett Road. Proceeds from newspaper recycling benefit the Jasper Library. 4-H activities Jasper Community 4-H and Cloverbud kids meet the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m., at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Jasper. Senior Volunteers The Retired Senior Volunteer Program needs volunteers, age 55 and up, to fill many areas of need in Jasper and Newton counties. Call Ginger Studensky at 384-5704, ext. 271. Photography Club The East Texas Photography Club meets the last Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the East Texas Art Center in Jasper. Each meeting there is a program designed to increase members' knowledge of photography techniques or equipment, and a photo contest. For more information call 698-3291 or 383- 0828. Volunteers needed Jasper Nursing and Rehabilitation activity department needs volunteers to read, call bingo, play board games, cards, dominoes or simply read one-on-one with residents.
