Winter Bash gives kids opportunity to practice

ELISE THE COW (not Elsie!) seems reluctant to go for a walk with Amber Rosenbaum. Learning to walk on a lead prepares animals for the judging arena and helps build good muscle tone.
The First Annual Winter Bash junior livestock show will give youngsters a taste of what it takes to show an animal at upcoming competitions, according to organizer Joan Ferguson. It will be held Feb. 17 at the Jasper County show barn on FM 777 near the airport.

Ferguson said Jasper used to have shows like this but not in the last several years.

"We're just getting the jackpot going again," Ferguson said.

Kids will have the opportunity to show their animals in front of an audience, earn ribbons, belt buckles and "bragging rights" before the shows in March and at the rodeo.

Proceeds from the show and concession stand support 4-H and the Junior Livestock Foundation buyers club, which helps less fortunate kids afford the cost of raising animals.

Entry fee is $20 and Ferguson would like to have entries by Jan. 31 if possible, but she said, "We want anyone who wants to show an animal to be able to do so. If they show up that day, we'll register them."

Categories include steers, breeding beef, goats, lambs and swine.

Check in and weigh in will be held from 7- 9 a.m. Feb. 17 for all animals. The show begins at 10 a.m. To expedite things, Ferguson said they will set up two separate show rings.

"Our purpose is to get more people involved and create more awareness of 4-H and FFA programs," Ferguson said. "We could not put a show like this on without the help of our sponsors." Donations pay for the prizes, the judges who come from out of town, and the utilities and expenses of operating the arena for the day, according to Ferguson.

"We're hoping for a good turnout for the sake of the kids. Admission is free, parking is free, and the kids put on a great show," Ferguson said.
