Bluebird Birdhouse Day

Martin Dies Jr. State Park is hosting its annual Bluebird Birdhouse Day Feb. 3 from 10 a.m. to noon. The event will be held in the dining hall/group shelter building in the Walnut unit of the park. Bluebird birdhouse kits and assembled houses will be available for a $5 donation. For more information, call 384-5231.

The next meeting of the Deep East Texas Archeological Society will be Monday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Newton County History Center. Sharon Kerr will present this month's program on "The Mystique of Machu Picchu."

JRTA to meet

The Jasper Retired Teachers Association will meet Monday, Feb. 5 at 2:30 p.m. in the Christian Science Center of the Church of Christ. Estelle Debney will be the guest speaker.

Casting call

The Lakes Rose Society will host their monthly meeting Thursday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Jasper city council room. Liz Connell will be the guest speaker.

Valentine banquet

Cancer benefit

Young Years Day Care on West Houston Street will host a benefit garage sale Saturday, Feb. 10 (rain date Feb. 17) from 7 a.m. - 4 p.m. Proceeds go to assist George Block in his battle with cancer. For questions call Shonda at 384-5210.

Games Day

United Methodist Women will host their third annual Game Day, Friday, Feb. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wesley Center. A light lunch will be served. Tickets are $8 per person and may be purchased from UMW members or from the office of First United Methodist Church.

Pruning day

The Lakes Rose Society will hold its annual pruning day Saturday, Feb. 17 (or Feb. 24, if it's raining) at 9 a.m. at the Jasper city hall rose beds. Pruning demonstrations and cutting giveaways free to everyone.

Spoon River Anthology

Cancer control program

Jasper-Newton County Public Health District's breast and cervical cancer control program offers women free breast exams, mammography and pap smear. Women aged 50-64 with limited income, who have no insurance, Medicaid or Medicare are eligible.
