Jasper drops two district tilts
"We scored our seasonhigh against Hamshire- Fannett as far as points are concerned," coach Joe Baker said. "I really appreciate the team's effort so far this year. They're finding out that even when things aren't going your way, it doesn't mean that your give up." Brittany Bronson led with 22 points; Anna Nation followed with nine; Breuanna Hafford, eight; Denessia Spikes, Tameeka Galloway and Clementine Johson had four points each. Baker said that Audrey Phillips played a great defensive game. Bridge City took a six point lead, 13-7, at the end of the first quarter. After getting behind 21-14 in the second period, Hafford connected to put the score at 16-21. Then Bronson hit two free-throws and Jasper was back in the game, trailing 21-18. With 34 seconds on the clock, Bridge City committed a turnover; the Lady 'Dogs worked the ball inside to Bronson who scored two and at the half, Jasper trailed 21-20. Bridge City tied the game with a free-throw early in the third period. Jasper lost their momentum after several turnovers and fouls, giving Bridge City a five point lead. The Lady 'Dogs were never again able to catch up and the period ended 30-21. Neither team scored well in the fourth, ending the game 39-28. Courtney Baker led with eight points, followed by Nation and Bronson, six each. Hafford contributed five. "It would be nice if I had this team one more year," Baker said. "They are really improving from week to week. I'm proud of the way they keep giving a hundred percent in every game." Junior varsity defeated Bridge City 32-30. Michelle Wallace led with 10 points. Jasper played West Orange-Stark last night and will meet Hardin- Jefferson at home, Friday, Feb. 2. |
