CASA seeks trainees Volunteers are being sought for Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), a program consisting of adult volunteers who advocate for abused, neglected and abandoned children. CASA volunteers are required to complete 30 hours of training that addresses such subjects as child abuse and neglect, child protective services, the courts, diversity, child development, interviewing and court reporting skills, and many other topics. The next series of classes will begin on Saturday, Feb. 17, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Jasper office of Advocates for Children, 908 N. Wheeler St. Subsequent classes will be held on Feb. 24, March 3 and 10. CASA volunteers are appointed by a judge and empowered to stand up for abused children who have been removed from their homes and to be a voice in court for these children as they progress through the foster care system. The paramount concern is seeking what is in the best interests of the child or children. The ultimate goal is that they are placed in safe, loving and permanent homes where they can thrive. Becoming a volunteer requires being at least 21 years of age, submission of the application, criminal background and reference checks, a $20 registration fee and the completion of 30 hours of training. If you are interested in becoming a CASA volunteer, or in learning about other ways to support the program, call Dorothy Stanley, Satellite Supervisor, at (409) 384-2272 or send an e-mail message to casaocdots@ sbcglobal.net. |
