Search begins for AD's position

The Jasper Independent School District will be accepting applications for the head football coach and athletic director position through March 1.

Interim Athletic Director Chris Coleman said the district has posted the opening on the Texas High School Association website along with the district's site in order to gauge any interest from outside coaches.

Former athletic director and head football coach Danny Lauve resigned the position to accept a similar position with Elgin.

"We are going to open up the position for outside applicants," Coleman said. "We are going to look inside too. We are not going to turn our head from (coaches currently on staff) because we know we have some guys that would do a fantastic job here.

"If we don't hire someone from within, we are going to look for someone with experience as a head coach," Coleman said.

He said there are "quality" candidates within the current coaching staff that will be considered for the position.

Coleman noted that filling the position quickly is vital to the success of the program both on the field and securing a coaching staff for the upcoming season.

"We want to move forward as quickly as we can for our kids' sake," Coleman said. "We want to get somebody here to work the off-season program. If it's not going to be one of our assistants already on staff, then we need to move quickly and get somebody in here and get the off-season going."

He said applications would be reviewed as they are turned in and even though the position was just posted Thursday, Feb. 15, he had already received inquiries.

Ideally, the position would be filled at the March 19 JISD board meeting but Coleman said no timetable has been set.

"We need to get this done as soon as we possibly can," Coleman said. "We feel that we have some good candidates in house but we also want to see if there is a head coach out there with experience that might be good for our program as well."
