Saturday's rain forced an early halt to the Jasper softball tournament, giving undefeated Warren the first place trophy. The Jasper Lady Bulldogs took three out of five games played.

Jasper defeated East Chambers 7-1 in the first game and lost 1-0 to Colmesneil in game two. Jesse Cordova pitched both games

Haley Walker had a double against Colmesneil and Emily Seale walked in game two, but there were no other hits.

The Lady 'Dogs hit the ball much better against Martinsville, winning that one 9-0. The Martinsville team had just finished basketball playoffs Wednesday night and this was their first game.

At the plate, Walker doubled and tripled; Abby Dickerson laid down several good bunts, and Keyna Mason had a double and one RBI. Lizzy White had a single and one RBI, Laura Fincannon doubled and brought in a run, and Stormie Shivers singled and had one RBI.

Coach Nancy Walker said her team was flat when they played Warren and ended with a 2-1 loss.

"We left six runners on base," she said. "We also couldn't get the bats hot."

Jasper came back to beat Woodville 5-0 in their only bracket game.

"The defense, pitching and hitting was much better," Walker said.

Freshman Shelby Griffin stepped in to pitch in the last three games.

"Shelby did a great job for us this weekend while Jesse Cordova was out for a death in her family," Walker said. "I was pleased with the way she stepped up and pitched some really good games for us."

Walker was also pleased with how the tournament ran this year.

"The tournament went real smooth this year," Walker said. "We had 27 teams and are looking to expand next year. I think we will be able to get even more teams. Thanks to all my parents, grandparents and coaches who helped this weekend. We couldn't do it without them."
