Caney Creek boat ramp reopens After months of cleanup following the devastation of Hurricane Rita, Caney Creek boat ramp is once again open. The boat ramp, as well as the camping loops at the popular Angelina National Forest recreation area has been closed to the public since September 2005 when Hurricane Rita swept through East Texas. Angelina Ranger Eddie Taylor said that cleaning up the recreation areas that serve Lake Rayburn has been a high priority. "Now, with the vast majority of the downed and damaged trees removed and tons of debris hauled off, Caney Creek boat ramp is again open," Taylor said. "But there is still a great deal of work to be done before the camping areas will be open." Taylor added that visitors should be careful when driving to the boat ramp because the parking lot has several damaged areas. "Workers are still clearing hazard trees from the camping areas, and water and electricity have not been restored so camping is not available at this time. A portable toilet will be available at the boat ramp parking area," Taylor said. "We're asking the public to continue to be patient and to call the Ranger's office at 936-897- 1068 for the latest updates. The day-use fee is $3 per day, per vehicle, for boating and fishing. ![]() |
