Garbage pickup

Garbage pickup for April 6 for the city of Jasper will be moved forward one day because of Good Friday. The regular Thursday pickup will take place, plus all those who normally get trash pickup on Friday will get picked up April 5 instead.

Fish fry

The Relay for Life Jasper will hold a fish fry with all the extras Saturday, April 7 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the First National Bank parking lot. The fish will be prepared by Mark Hughes Catering and costs $8 per plate. Pre-orders can be faxed "attention Pamela" to 384-6389. Deadline for pre-orders is April 5.

Dogwood arts and crafts

The Woodville Business and Professional Women's Club will sponsor an arts and crafts fair April 7, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. during Dogwood Festival. Crafts must be totally or partially handcrafted. For information on booth space, contact the Tyler County Chamber of Commerce at 409 283-2632.

Horn Trail Ride

The Horn Memorial Scholarship fund will be holding their 18th annual trail ride/parade in Jasper Saturday, April 7, at 2101 North Main Street. Pre-festivities start at 10 a.m. For tickets, booth rental or donations, call Glendale or John at (713) 436-8508 or 383-0890.

Community Health Fair

The New Lighthouse Ministries at 1013 Helen Street in Jasper will host a Community Health Fair sponsored by the Deep East Texas Foundation. The first annual fair will be held Saturday, April 7, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. They will offer blood pressure and blood glucose screening, cholesterol screening, education, refreshments and door prizes.

Beta Sigma Phi

The Jasper chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority will have their regular monthly meeting Monday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the home of Charlotte Wells. For more information, call Madeline Parker, 384-4386.

Garden Hour

The Lakes Area Rose Society will meet April 12 at 7 p.m. in the Jasper City Council room at 465 S. Main. Guest speaker will be horticulturist Dennis Franklin, who hosts the radio show "The Garden Hour" and write a weekly gardening column for the Beaumont Enterprise. For more information, call 423-4756.

Benefit garage sale

Trinity Episcopal Church, corner of Main and Collier, will hold a benefit garage sale Friday, April 13, and Saturday, April 14, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Scouts' garage sale

Boy Scout Troop 932 is accepting donations in good condition for garage sales April 14 and 21, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the scout Hut on Second Street across from the Jasper Junior High School. Committee chair Lloyd Persons says, "Please consider a spring cleaning in your home or business and help out the scouting program at the same time." Donations will be accepted after 6 p.m. on the Friday evenings prior to each sale. For more information call 384-8296.

Magnolia Festival

The 22nd annual Magnolia Festival will be held Friday and Saturday, April 20-21, at Magnolia Park in Kirbyville. "Lazy Days of Spring" is the theme; winning design of the t-shirts depicting the theme is by Salina Aranda, a high school art student. Parade begins at 10 a.m. April 21. Mother / daughter

The Mother / Daughter ministries will hold its fourth annual retreat Friday and Saturday, April 20-21, at the East Texas Baptist Encampment in Newton. Mothers/caretakes and their first through sixth grade girls check in at 5 p.m. Friday for a Hawaiian-themed pajama party. Both days feature praise and worship, group activities and meals. $10,000 Visa card

Jasper High School's Project Graduation is selling a limited number (300) of tickets for a $10,000 Visa card to be drawn April 15. Call JHS at 384-3242.

4-H horse project

Sabine County 4-H horse project playday series will start April 21 for six months through Sept. 15. The playdays will be held at the Sabine County Youth Foundation Expo Center in Hemphill.

Relay for Life

The annual Relay for Life that raises money for the American Cancer Society will be held on the courthouse square in Jasper April 27-28. To volunteer, call Mary Marthaler at 384-8751. The committee is also seeking talent for the all-night extravaganza. The Relay Idol contest begins at 11:30 p.m., followed by a Karaoke contest. Food bank

Harvest Church at 1501 S. Wheeler now offers a food bank the first Tuesday of each month from 9 - 11 a.m.

1997 Class reunion

Monthly recycling

Texas Beautiful announced that every third weekend recycle bins will be available at the southeast corner of the Community Church parking lot for things like plastic and steel. Area coordinator Patty Shaw says newspapers can be recycled any weekday by dropping them off at the city transfer station on Hi Truett Road. Proceeds from newspaper recycling benefit the Jasper Library.

Senior Volunteers

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program needs volunteers, age 55 and up, to fill many areas of need in Jasper and Newton counties. Call Ginger Studensky at 384-5704, ext. 271.

Grief support

The Friends of Job is a new grief support organization to help those who have lost a child, grandchild or sibling. They will meet the first and third Tuesday each month from 6:30-8 p.m. at First Baptist Church on North Main in Jasper. For more information call Sam or Brenda Job, 698-2356.

Regional arts

East Texas Regional Art Center, located at the corner of Austin and Crockett streets in Jasper features rotating exhibits from national, regional and local artists. Art classes and workshops are available. The art league meets the first Monday of each month and is open to the public. For more information call 384- 2404 or 489-9460. The center is open Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturdays by appointment.

4-H activities

Jasper Community 4-H and Cloverbud kids meet the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m., at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Jasper. For more information on 4-H call Nicole Hamilton at 384-7866; for Cloverbud Kids call Betty Morton at 384-2604 or Charla James at 384-7866. 4-H shooting sports group meets the fourth Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Junior Livestock barn;call Jimmy or Dru Miller at 384- 9900.

Alzheimer's support

The Alzheimer's caregiver support group meet the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at Dickerson Memorial Hospital. There will be guest speakers and refreshments. For more information call Lela at 698- 9308 or Marty at 383-2388.

Humane Society donations

The Jasper Lakes Area Human Society has published a wish list for donations that includes blankets, towels, dog and cat food, cat litter, collars, copy paper and postage stamps. For more information call 384-8251 or email jar@jas.net.
