Survivors have special place in Relay for Life

The all-night marathon Relay for Life is on a campaign to get more survivors in the area to join in the event that raises money for cancer research, according to chairman Lloyd Persons.

"It's important to understand that the Relay for Life over-all event is a celebration of life for our survivors," Persons said.

"Local cancer survivors will have a special place to gather and enjoy the Relay activities," Persons said. "Plus, a free dinner will be served nearby for the registered survivors and their caregivers."

More than 30 teams have signed up to date. During the event, relay teams walk all night starting Friday, April 27, at 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. Saturday, April 28, but there are also lots of activities and entertainment for spectators.

There will be a special ceremony for the lighting in luminarias, which can be purchased in memory of those who have lost their life to cancer or to honor those who survived or a currently battling the disease.

Survivors and caregivers need to pre-register with Troy Washburn at 489-1496 for the free dinner. Teams needs should register with Kay Breidenthal at 381- 8761.To sponsor some of the luminarias, contact Harry or Dot Scheibe at 384-8718.
