TxDOT warns candidates to remove campaign signs when elections are over Placing non-departmental signs or vehicles in the highway right-of-way is against state law warns the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The department is reminding candidates and their volunteers to be careful when placing signs along the highway. "Placing advertisement and political signs on the state highway right-of-way affects our ability to maintain the highway system," said John Barton, Beaumont District Engineer. "When employees are forced to spend their time picking up illegally placed signs they are not able to spend that time maintaining and repairing our highways." State law requires campaign signs be placed off the right-of-way and be no larger than 50 square feet. Signs may only be posted no earlier than 90 days prior to an election. They must be removed no later than 10 days after the election. Politicians and campaign volunteers can find out more information as to where signs can be placed can contact TxDOT at 892- 7311. |
