Walking the halls
By BETTY POWERS Principal of Parnell Elementary

We are rapidly approaching the end of the school year. Our students and staff have worked hard, and we have already seen results. We would like to thank our parents for their support and desire to help us educate their children. We are committed to excellence at Parnell, and our TAKS assessment is just one measure we use to determine progress toward our quest.

We would like to highlight just a few of our upcoming events. April 20, our Right Choice Carnival will take place on the west playground. Marcia Morgan is chairman of the event and has worked many hours to see that students have a day they can remember.

On April 24 and May 1 the fourth grade will split up and take turns presenting a spring musical under the direction of Erin Parma. Mrs. Parma is our music teacher, and she does a fantastic job.

April 3 and 4 we will travel to Mill Creek Park where there will be a field day with relay races, sack races, and other events, conducted by the P.E. department.

May 11, one of my favorite days, we will recognize our accelerated readers at "Good Morning Parnell." I challenged our student at the first of the year, at that time we only had a few avid readers. Now almost 200 students will be getting prizes for achieving at least 10 points or more in our AR Club.

April 26 our gifted/talented students will be traveling to Houston to visit the Health Museum and participate in a workshop called, "No Brainer," about the human brain.

A goal at Parnell this year has been to reactivate PRIDE, our parent organization. If there are any parents or community volunteers who are interested they can call our school at 384-2212 and talk to Linda Williams.
