Registration opened last week for summer and fall courses for currently enrolled students at Angelina College (AC). Registration for new students will begin in May; students can call to schedule orientation (936) 633-5212 or (936) 633- 6592.

All of the the AC branches offer a variety of courses for academic studies and vocational training. The interactive schedule on the website, www.angelina.edu, lists courses by campus; not all branches have summer sessions.

Besides the main campus in Lufkin, AC has nearby branches in Jasper, Pineland, San Augustine, Woodville and Hemphill.

Pineland

At Pineland, the Sabine Area Career Center (SACC) of AC offers GED programs, college courses and degrees, vocational education like welding, and recreational classes like photography.

"Many residents of Sabine County don't even know we are here," said Rachael Zanek, director of SACC. "We also offer career counseling and job placement through Work Force Solutions and we have a first class computer lab."

Zanek said concurrent students, that is students enrolled in college classes while still attending high school, are eligible for a grant that allows them to take medical career certification courses and obtain their books free of charge.

Concurrent students can also take additional college courses through Distance Learning, in which the student participates in the class via cameras and television monitors. SACC offers a $125 scholarship program for Distance Learning and internet classes.

For the summer session, the Pineland campus will offer college credit for speech, math, art appreciation, government, English and history.

They also offer certification courses such as nurse aide, medication aide, water and waste water, welding, and early childhood development.

Jasper

The Jasper AC branch is now registering existing students for academic classes for the Summer I and II and fall sessions, according to director Kristi Clark. She said the LVN (licensed vocational nurse) training program operates on a different schedule and is not open at this time.

The interactive summer schedule in Jasper lists science, arts, math, English, government, history and Spanish classes.

Currently enrolled students at Jasper Teaching Centre can call 489-9000 to schedule to register to schedule advice with a counselor.

Regular registration for new students begins in May.

Registration and Financial Aid

For registration, students need to bring a high school transcript, scores from tests such as TASP, ACT, SAT or TAAS, and any advanced education transcripts such as credits from another college.

Counselors can advise students if grants or scholarships are available. Many grants are community supported and specific to the school or the line of study.
