Check, service fire safety equipment

Jasper Fire Marshal Stephen Williamson reported that fire extinguishers seem to be a common problem as he continues business inspections throughout the city.

"Fire extinguishers are the first defense in fighting a fire and must be maintained properly," Williamson said. "Taking time to check your extinguisher is important to making sure you are prepared should a situation arise."

Fire extinguishers should be mounted at least 12" off the floor and no higher than five feet above the floor where they are easily accessible. Afire extinguisher should never be blocked or hidden, according to Williamson. Fire extinguishers in businesses should be serviced by a fire extinguisher company annually. The gauge on fire extinguishers should be checked monthly at the same time smoke detectors are tested.
