Booklovers Club

The Booklovers Club meets monthly every fourth Wednesday at 2 p.m at Coleman Hall, First Presbyterian Church. Next meeting is on April 25 at 2 p.m.

Plant and yard sales

The Rayburn Bloomers Garden Club is having a plant/yard sale in conjuction with a a community wide yard sale April 28 from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the parking lot of the Lake Rayburn Methodist Church on Farm Road 1007 off 255, in Lake Rayburn. Available parking in Catholic Church parking lot.

Bon Wier Reunion

The annual Bon Wier school reunion will be April 28 at 9 a.m. at the Pentecostal Church Annex. Bring a covered dish.

Annual fiddling contest

Newton County Fair will hold its first annual fiddling contest April 28 from 2 - 4 p.m. Prizes and ribbons will be awarded. To enter, call Christye Shaw at 379-2200 or 379-2328, register by noon Friday, April 27.

Red Hat Round-up

The annual Round-up of all area Red Hat Ladies will be Saturday April 28 at the East Texas Jamboree in Broaddus. Buffet will start at 11 a.m., music at 1 p.m. and tickets are $15. For more information call 994-3315.

Homecoming

The Frisby-Hyden Homecoming will be May 5 from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Scrapping Valley (old school building).

Benefit for Nell Love

Afundraiser barbecue, live gospel music and silent auction will be held May 5 starting at noon at Whispering Creeks RV Club House at 3713 U.S. Highway 190 East, to help pay medical expenses for Nell Love. The event is hosted by God's House of Prayer and worship. Orders for $6 plates can be called into 397-4025 or 594-7113 by May 4.

Brookeland Project Grad

The Brookeland senor class will hold a skeet shoot fundraiser for Project Graduation May 5 at 11 a.m. at Angela Murray's, 338 County Road 201 in Brookeland. They will sell a barbecue plate for $5, and skeet shoot rounds with first and second place prizes for each round and a gun awarded in the final round. Homer Cemetery Meeting

The Homer Cemetery annual meeting will be May 5 at the Homer Cemetery at noon. For more information call 379-8834.

Forgotten Towns

The Deep East Texas Archeological Society meets Monday, May 7, at 7 p.m. in the Newton County History Center on U.S. Highway 190. This month's guest speakers will be Bob and Doris Bowman, authors of 36 books about East Texas. Their newest, "The Forgotten Towns of East Texas," includes prehistoric Indians mounds, Spanish and French settlements, river ports, sawmill and logging communities.

Free Car Seat Inspection

There will be a free car seat inspection May 12 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at The Matthew Center Community Church on 720 South Wheeler. Seats will be checked for proper installation, fit to your child, and for safety recalls. Adults need to bring their child and know their weight.

Masonic History

All Masons, friends and public are invited to celebrate 140 years of Masonic History on May 12 at 4 p.m. at the Nathan Corley Lodge #294. Lodge is located south of downtown Kirbyville on U.S. Highway 96 across the road from OCBM.

4-H awards banquet

The Jasper 4-H members will hold an awards banquet May 17 at 6:30 p.m.at the Pavilion in the Pines on U.S. Highway 96 North behind Wings. Placques will be awarded and a memorial scholarship in the name of Lawrence Wayne Gilley, a 15- year-old member who died in a car accident.

30 year reunion

JLAHS Garage Sale

The Jasper Lakes Area Human Society will hold their annual Garage Sale fundraiser in early May. Donations of garage sale type items are sought. Also, a wish list for donations includes blankets, towels, dog and cat food, cat litter, collars, copy paper and postage stamps.
