City continues cleaning up junk cars Beware of false enforcers, according to Jasper Fire Marshal Stephen Williamson. "With the price of metal up at the salvage yard, reports have been received that some folks have been claiming they are helping the fire marshal's office in the enforcement of old cars," Williamson said. Although his office is cracking down on junked motor vehicles (JMVs) left in plain view, "It is important that it be known that no individuals are endorsed or authorized to make contact with residents on behalf of the city." Williamson said one of his top priorities is communication, and that he follows several methods to notify people of code violations. "Meeting people in person is still my preferred option," Williamson said. When that doesn't work, he makes phone calls, sends notices by certified mail, and posts color-coded notices on the property. Yellow is first notice, followed in 30 days by an orange warning. If the vehicle is not removed in 15 more days, the situation is taken to court where an Order to Remove is obtained. The green sticker posted after that gives the owner 72 hours, or the city will confiscate and destroy the vehicle. "The prices being paid for metal at this time will cover all expenses incurred by the city," Williamson said, so at this time he does not assess fines, which could range from $200 to $2,000 per day. "I have had several incidents where the owner on record is surprised when I make contact because they sold the vehicle years ago," Williamson said. He traced one vehicle to five different owners who were never on record. For liability reasons, Williamson advises that sellers make sure the title is changed with the state so that they are not held liable for that vehicle. |
