DETAS delves into East Texas history

The Deep East Texas Archeological Society will have their next meeting May 7 at 7 p.m. at the Newton County History Center with guest speakers, Bob and Doris Bowman of Lufkin.

The Bowmans have published 36 books about East Texas and will discuss their newest, "The Forgotten Towns of East Texas, Volume 1." The book includes stories and photos focusing on 66 towns in 45 East Texas counties. "The Forgotten Towns of East Texas" covers some of the earliest towns in East Texas, a prehistoric Indian village, the first Spanish settlement in East Texas, and Champ de Aisle.

Bob Bowman is a member of the Texas Historical Commission and serves as vice-chair of its Archeological Committee and has been active in several of Texas' historical and archeological organizations. The Bowmans have both served as chairs of the Texas Council of the Humanities.
