Sayers unseats Meigs for District 2 post by two votes

By a margin of two votes, Randy Sayers defeated incumbent Gayle Meigs for the Jasper City Council District 2 post Saturday, May 12.

Sayers garnered 179 votes to Meigs' 177 to take over the council seat.

"Randy is going to do a fine job," said Meigs, who called Monday morning to congratulate Sayers on winning the election. "I am sure that along with Mayor Barber's strong leadership the city of Jasper will continue to move forward in the years to come.

"My greatest concern was to always look after the taxpayer's money and to make sure that it was spent wisely and not used in a manner to benefit any particular special interest," Meigs said. "We managed to turn that tide in the last two years and I am hopeful that all elected officials continue to remember that they represent the taxpaying citizens of Jasper, Texas."

District 1 Councilman Joe Clyde Adams ran unopposed for election and garnered 125 votes during Saturday's election.

Numerous attempts to contact Sayers for comment were unreturned.
