JHS math students host Algebra Fair for Parnell

Jasper High School algebra students hosted the fifth annual Algebra Fair for Parnell third grade classes May 11 in the JHS Shell Gym.

Students from Becca Dougharty and Leslie Rector's third grade classes did basic algebraic math operations with Algebra II students from Becky Pickering's pre-AP classes.

"We do this math fair so the kids won't think math is scary," said Pickering. It gives the little kids a look at what they can do as high school students."

Pickering's high school students prepared 15-minute lessons to teach algebra concepts by using hands-on interaction.

"This has been a great opportunity for us to be in the teacher's shoes," said Jacy Manning, 16, sophomore. "I have seen that no one learns the same way."

"I have learned about associate communitive property and had a lot of fun learning with the tennis balls," said Jeb Cordova, third grade student.
