Allen, Freeman take win on Toledo Bend
More than $35,000 was won in an all cash payout. The teams had one more chance to push for the points and pounds to win Angler of the Year in a race that has been tight all year. Five sacks over 20 pounds were brought to the scales, but Glen Freeman and Harold Allen topped them all to win $10,000! Toledo Bend has been in good shape being at or near full pool this spring. The grass beds are in full swing, and many anglers have been hitting them hard to pull out the big bass hiding in them. Less than nine pounds separated 1st place to 22nd place. There was a gentle wind providing a light ripple on the lake, coupled with blue bird skies accented with a slight haze. Although the temperatures were mild in the 80's, the bright sun put quite a shade of color on most of the anglers.
The father and son team of Wayne and Cody Ebarb won second place with 21.04 lbs. "We fished just north of the bridge, and caught all of our fish on Old Monsters and 1 oz Mud Bugs" Wayne stated. "Our best bite was between 11:00- 1:00, and all day we probably locked down around 14 keepers. We lost three that would've put our weight near 27 pounds." They were fishing structure 14'-18' deep. "The fish seemed to have moved since Friday, but we managed to find them. The best part of the day was just fishing with my son. He's 15 years old and we have a great time together. We need to spend as much time as we can with our kids, and young people. They are our future." The Ebarbs were presented with a $4,000 check. Shaun Loftin and Gerald Guin slid into third place just 5/100 of a pound behind the Ebarbs with 20.99 lbs. They headed south for their catch, fishing a grass patch on a main lake hump. "It was the only spot we fished all day. We just kept going at it with Carolina rigs, crank baits and jigs. We knew the fish were there, so we just stayed with them." It took until nearly noon to wrap up a limit, but they were able to cull four times after that. Bass N Bucks paid them $3,000 for their third place win. There were two bass weighed in over nine pounds. The team of Joe Coatney and Ryan Ganey hooked the heaviest weighing 9.88 lbs! The team explained "We caught a few on top water baits in the morning, then culled all of those with a crank bait later on. In the afternoon, we headed to a main lake hump about 14' deep." At that point, they were throwing Carolina rigged sweet beavers, and at 2:00 the big one hit. "When I set the hook, she was just dead weight. After that she started pulling hard!" Ryan said. I knew she was big, but didn't know how big until she jumped out of the water. We were in open water, so I didn't have any trouble getting her to the boat. Joe did a great job of netting her." Their Big Bass earned a $1,000 check and they won fifth place overall with the last sack over 20 pounds for an additional $1,700. The highest finishing qualified Champion boat team was Johnny Winfree, fishing with Scotty Reynolds. They are members of the Diamond program, and fishing out of their Champion Boat they ranked the highest of all qualified teams, finishing in seventh place overall.
