Archeology site celebrates 250th anniversary

MENARD, Texas - Join in celebrating the 250th anniversary of the establishment of the largest Spanish fort in Texas during the week of June 9- 16. The Presidio de San Sabá Board of Directors and the Texas Archeology Society are planning several events to mark the 1757 founding of Presidio de San Saba and Mission Santa Cruz de San Sabá through the combined efforts of Spanish soldiers, priests and Apache Indian labor.

Located near present day Menard, the fort originated to offer protection to Mission Santa Cruz de San Sabá. An attack on the mission is depicted in a replica of one of the oldest Texas historical paintings, which was unveiled on the steps of the Texas State Capitol in March 2006. "The Destruction of the Mission San Sabá," depicts a 1758 massacre at the mission and is one of the earliest Texas historic events captured on canvas. Also present at the unveiling were Texas Historical Commission (THC) archeologists, who participated in the discovery of the ruined mission site, who participated in the discovery of the ruined mission site.

Individuals of all ages are invited to participate in events including the Texas Archeological Society's Field School at the Presidio de San Saba site. Experienced and avocational archeologists will be on hand to offer quality guidance and instruction. Children are welcome and will also have the opportunity to participate in the investigations. Teachers training will also be offered at the field school.
