Sandy Creek site of Juneteenth festivities

Juneteenth, known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, originated in Galveston in 1865. It commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth has become a world wide celebration. Today families gather to reflect on self-development and respect for all cultures. Festivities involve music, dance, sports and food.

Jasper will hold their annual Juneteenth celebration at Sandy Creek Park June 15-16. A banquet will begin June 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church and the official celebration begins June 16 with a parade starting at 5 p.m. and concluding with fireworks at dusk.
