Unemployment rates falling

The May seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 4.1 percent, the lowest since the current series began in 1976.

Seasonally adjusted nonagricultural employment in Texas grew by 22,700 jobs in May, with 10 industries gaining jobs from the previous month. Texas employers now have added 239,000 jobs over the past 12 months.

Here are the unemployment rates from surrounding counties:

Angelina - May 2006: 4.7, May 2007: 3.9

Jasper - May 2006: 6.5, May 2007: 5.2

Nacogdoches - May 2006: 4.6, May 2007: 3.6

Newton - May 2006: 7.1, May 2007: 5.8

Polk - May 2006: 6.3, May 2007: 5.3

Sabine - May 2006: 9.1, May 2007: 8.0

Tyler - May 2006: 6.5, May 2007: 5.1

Professional and business services have added 61,600 jobs, education and health have added 4,900 jobs, trade, transportation and utilities added 20,900 jobs and the mining industry added 1,600 positions; all within the past 12 months.

"As more and more people find work, the economy improves for all Texans," said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. "The state has added more than 104,000 jobs since the first of the year."
