Health Fest aims to improve kids' lives Kids Health Fest will be Sept. 29 at Few Primary from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The purpose of the health fest is 'raising healthy kids for life.' The main focus is to educate children from infancy to age 20, and their parents about healthy lifestyles, activities that promote nutrition, exercise and other health positives. "This is the first generation of children predicted to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents primarily due to childhood obesity," said Lyn Few, nurse practitioner. "The majority of overweight children and adolescents become overweight adults, placing them at risk for a number of chronic and degenerative diseases." There will be no invasive screenings (pin pricks, etc.), but the fest will help show kids how to wash their hands correctly and information on how to tell parents they do not feel well, but volunteers are needed. Volunteers will man the booths and teach simple three to five-minute health concepts to children. The information on each health concept will be supplied, but sponsors are needed to supply volunteers. The sponsors and volunteers do not have to be a medical business or have medical background. If you would like to help contact Shelby Woods at DETCOG at 384-5704, ext. 254, Lyn Few at 384-5523 or Fleta Youngblood at 384- 6829. |
