Six-year-old turns into police hero

As far is Bonnie Lewis is concerned, her six-year-old grandson Ryan Ebarb is her hero.

Ebarb was instrumental in witnessing an attempted theft of Lewis' wallet inside Wal-Mart July 8.

"I told them all that he was my hero," Lewis said.

According to Lewis, she was checking out at the store when she noticed a woman near her buggy. Lewis was busy placing her items up for check out.

"This lady reached into my purse and took my wallet out and my grandson saw her do it," Lewis said.

Lewis said Ebarb alerted her to the theft and pointed his grandmother in the direction as the suspect was leaving the store.

"I started running towards the exit and I spotted her," Lewis said.

Lewis' son, Alex Ebarb, was outside and saw his mother screaming after this woman and started chasing the woman.

The woman dropped the purse and wallet and fled the scene.

According to Jasper police reports, a witness to the incident as well as the officer responding to the scene knew the suspect in the case.

"The officer drove to the house and found the car that the suspect left in and put it all together," said Jasper Police Chief Todd Hunter. "Because it was a misdemeanor and done outside of his presence, he could not make an arrest at that time and we had to obtain a warrant."
