CASA Program

Advocates for Children, Inc. "A CASA Program," at 908 N. Wheeler in Jasper, is having A volunteer training class July 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The training manual is $20 due at the first class and applications must be completed and sent from the Jasper office at 384-2272. Health Needs

Texas Department of State Health Services will conduct an East Texas Community Health Needs Assessment Aug 1 from 1 - 3:30 p.m. at 465 South Main St. in Jasper. For more information contact Jasper Newton County Public Health District at 384-6829, ext. 237 or 250.

Retirement reception

Tom McClurg, executive director of the Jasper economic development corporation is retiring July 31. A reception will be held in his honor July 26 from 3 - 5 p.m. at the Council Chambers at Jasper City Hall on 465 South Main.

Blood Drive

LifeShare bus will have a blood drive Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Wal- Mart in Jasper.

Burkeville Homecoming

The Bearkat Ex- Students Homecoming will be Aug. 4 at the Burkeville High School cafetorium. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with a business meeting at 11 a.m., dinner at 5:30 p.m.

Boater education

There will be a boater education class Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Jasper Firehall for $5. Must be at least 12 years old to receive certification and must RSVP by Aug. 1. Contact Cindy at 384-6894 for more information.

Archeological Society

The next meeting of the Deep East Texas Archeological Society will be Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Newton County History Center. Guest speaker will be Dr. Chip McGimsey discussing the topic, "exploring some Civil War sites in Southwestern LA." For more information contact Phyllis Summer at 565-2022.

Fire dept. fundraiser

Jasper ISD new student registration at Few will be Aug. 16 - 24 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Parnell will be Aug. 13 - 24 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Rowe will be Aug. 14 - 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., JJHS will be Aug. 15 - 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., JHS will be Aug. 14 - 16 from 8 - 11:30 a.m. and 1 - 3:30 p.m. and to register with STARS call 384-2720.

Keep Jasper Beautiful

Keep Jasper Beautiful will have a luncheon meeting the first Tues. of every month from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Woman's Civic Club on 156 W. Milam.

Advocate residents

Volunteers are needed to advocate for and protect the rights of residents in nursing homes. Volunteers will spend time as a Volunteer Ombudsman promoting quality care. No prior experience is required, training and supervision is provided. Must be able to work independently with professional oversight and be willing to submit reports. Grief support

The Friends of Job helps those who have lost a child, grandchild or sibling. They meet the first and third Tuesday each month from 6:30-8 p.m. at First Baptist Church. For more information call 698- 2356.
