State competition
JIM ED HUGHES, of Newton, scored points in three events at the Texas state region XII Junior Olympic track & Field championship meet in Odessa last week. Hughes competed in the discus, shot put and javelin finishing with personal bests in two of the three events. He finished fifth in the discus with a toss of 148' 10", sixth in the shot put throwing 44' 10" and hurling the javelin 135' for a second place finish. Hughes competes in the "young men" division, ages 17 & 18.
