Newton Lions Club

The Newton Lions Club will meet Aug. 2 at noon at the First Baptist Church. Speaker will be Shelly Haynes to discuss current progress and plans for the first home building projects in East Texas. Lunch will be served.

Garage sale

Burkeville Homecoming

The Bearkat Ex-Students Homecoming will be Aug. 4 at the Burkeville High School cafetorium. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with a business meeting at 11 a.m., dinner at 5:30 p.m.

Elder Advocate

Volunteers are needed to advocate for and protect the rights of residents in nursing homes. Volunteers will spend time as a Volunteer Ombudsman promoting quality care. No prior experience is required, training and supervision is provided. Must be able to work independently with professional oversight and be willing to submit reports. Senior Volunteers

Grief support

Cancer control

Jasper-Newton County Public Health District's breast and cervical cancer control program offers women free breast exams, mammography and pap smear. Women aged 50-64 with limited income, who have no insurance, Medicaid or Medicare are eligible. Bereavement luncheon

Caring Friends bereavement luncheon for anyone who has lost a loved one is held the third Tuesday of each month at 11 a.m. at the Belle-Jim Hotel. Luncheon is hosted by Lakes Area Hospice (384-5995) and Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home (384-5781).

Regional arts
