Letters to the Editor Welcome signs show real pride By SHERRY NICHOLS Jasper Jasperites, if you haven't been down Hwy. 96 North lately, you are missing a treat. Look at the "Welcome to Jasper" sign! We definitely are the "Jewel of the Forest." The sign shows how proud we are of Jasper. If we have pride - others notice. Thank you Gloria Monzingo for overcoming all obstacles to make this a reality. Littering can be ignorant, trashy By RON BURNS Jasper Keep Jasper Beautiful! This is easier said than done, but moving toward a more beautiful Jasper can be easy if we all do our individual part. Let's start by each individual household being responsible for proper disposal of its' solid waste. The Tipsters, as they were christened back in 2003 when they were first forced upon us by the city, are not designed to be yard art or curb ornamentation. Please put them out on collection day, then hide the ugly things after pick-up. Do not leave them in the street or on the side-walk. The tipster instructions as outlines in The Jasper Newsboy of June 18, 2003 states "As part of the program all solid waste must be bagged prior to placement in the can. No loose garbage will be picked up. This requirement helps hold down local litter." Do not put loose garbage in your tipster. Spillage of loose garbage is not the fault of the refuge truck driver, it is the fault of the user for not properly bagging their trash. Take responsibility for the street and sidewalk in front of your residence and business. Trim your plants and trees so they do not interfere with pedestrian traffic, and pick up those bottles, cans and wrappers that thoughtless, ignorant people toss out as they blast by. Show pride for your residence, your neighborhood and Jasper. Parents, grandparents, teachers and daycare workers teach our children to properly dispose of those bottles, cans, cups and wrappers and to take pride in keeping playgrounds and other public areas, as well as their homes, litter free. Let us all remember that littering is ignorant, and trashy. |
