The East Texas Art League continues a show by local artists Carole Gilchrist and Louise Townsend today through Aug. 25.

JISD substitutes

Orientation for current and new substitute teacher candidates for Jasper I.S.D will be today in the Jasper Jr. High School cafeteria at 10 a.m. For more information call 384- 2401.

1994 Class Reunion

Brookeland ISD

Brookeland ISD school offices are open Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Meet the teacher will be held Aug. 24, 2-5 p.m. and school begins Aug. 27. New school hours are 7:55 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Rockhounds and Gems

The annual Gem and Mineral Show at the VFW hall near FM 2799 and 1747 Aug. 25-26 features jewelry, polished stones and raw materials,demonstrations, a fluorescent mineral display, door prizes, silent auction and kids activities. Admission is $2, students free. For information, www.jas.net/~nash.

Trades day

After school program

21st Century Community Learning Center, 1013 Helen St. in Jasper (behind the old Burger King), will hold an after school program starting Aug. 27 from 3:30 - 7:30 p.m, Mon. - Thur., for educational developmental and recreational services.

Flag football

Flag football sign-up will be Sept. 1 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Novrozsky's restaurant. Registration is open to boys and girls 4 to 8 years old for $40 per child and coaches are needed. For more information call Jerome Schroer at 383-0973.

160 years of service

The Brookeland United Methodist Church will celebrate 160 years of Methodism Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. The church will receive a Texas Historical Marker and celebrate the church's 100th anniversary. Music will be provided by the Rayburn Country Dulcimers. Take loop 149 off Hwy. 96 to Old Hwy. 8 N., church located on west side of road.

Memory Walk

The Beaumont Memory Walk fight to eliminate Alzheimer's disease will be held Sept. 29 with registration at 9 a.m. and the walk at 10 a.m. on Crockett St. in downtown Beaumont. BBQ fundraiser

Lake Rayburn Fire Department will have a barbeque fundraiser Sept. 1 from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. at Rayburn Realty, Hwy. 255 and FM 1007 intersection. They will sell links and chopped beef sandwiches with chips and drink for $5. For more information call 698-2109.

Making the dream

Making the Dream a Reality is a seminar for parents of young adults with disabilities to be held in Beaumont Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Beaumont Plaza on Walden Rd. 50th senior class

The class of 2007 marked the 50th senior class to graduate from Bridge City High School. The Bridge City Alumni Association invites the participation of all ex-students and faculty from class 1957, 1967, 1977, 1987, 1997 and 2007 to a homecoming celebration Sept. 21-22. Keep Jasper Beautiful will have a luncheon meeting the first Tues. of every month from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Woman's Civic Club on 156 W. Milam.

Elder Advocate

Volunteers are needed to advocate for and protect the rights of residents in nursing homes. Volunteers will spend time as a Volunteer Ombudsman promoting quality care. No prior experience is required, training and supervision is provided. Must be able to work independently with professional oversight and be willing to submit reports. Senior Volunteers

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program needs volunteers, age 55 and up, to fill many areas of need in Jasper and Newton counties. Call Ginger Studensky at 384-5704, ext. 271.

Grief support

The Friends of Job helps those who have lost a child, grandchild or sibling. They meet the first and third Tuesday each month from 6:30-8 p.m. at First Baptist Church. For more information call 698-2356.

Cancer control

Jasper-Newton County Public Health District's breast and cervical cancer control program offers women free breast exams, mammography and pap smear. Women aged 50-64 with limited income, who have no insurance, Medicaid or Medicare are eligible. Call the Jasper office at 384-6829; Newton office at 379-5291; Kirbyville office at 423-6133 or the Buna office at 994- 5921, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
