Coldspring runs past Woodville late 34-13
By JIMMY GALVAN Managing Editor

For almost four quarters, the Woodville Eagles and the Coldspring Trojans battled in a close contest.

But the Trojans broke open a tight contest by scoring 20 points late and capitalizing on several Woodville penalties to claim an opening night 34- 13 victory over the Eagles.

"The game was close until the end then it went south for us," said Woodville Head Football Coach Steve Fentress. "The score doesn't tell how close of a game it was. It was just a great football game."

Coldspring held a 14-13 lead late in the third quarter but Woodville drove down to the Trojan 10. A holding penalty on Woodville pushed the Eagles back 10 yards and pretty much killed the drive.

Coldspring then reeled off a long drive of their own aided by a long run down to the Woodville 12. A couple of plays later, Coldspring pushed in the touchdown and took control of the contest.

In the early going, both teams scored on their opening possessions of the season. Coldspring took the opening kickoff and drove the length of the field to score. But Woodville came right back on their first drive on the season and found the scoreboard as well.

"We just came out on the short end of the stick," Fentress said. "When they went up by nine, it just took the air out of us a bit."

For the game, Adam Rigsby led Woodville with 66 yards rushing on 15 carries.

Scores for Woodville included an eight-yard run by Paul Price and on a touchdown connection from Stephen Williams to Brian Taylor from 12 yards out.

Fentress said he looks for the Eagles to rebound this week when the Eagles travel to Splendora to take on the Wildcats.

"They are very similar to us," Fentress said. "They will keep you honest offensively. They are a good, solid football team who likes to control the football."

Even though the Eagles lost, Fentress said he was pleased with the performance his Eagles put forth in the season opener.

"We didn't look all that bad at times against Coldspring," Fentress said. "It was just one of those nights when someone was going to break and unfortunately it was us. I was very pleased with the effort. Defensively, we picked it up after their first two scores. I'm very pleased with our progress since last Thursday's scrimmage. Hopefully, it will show up with a win this week."
