Buna clicking on all fronts in 62-6 win over Burkeville Name the hottest Southeast Texas football squad in the area? If you said the Buna Cougars, go to the head of the class. Buna crushed Class 1A Burkeville 62-6 Friday, Sept. 7 in Burkeville. "We are executing our offense real well right now," said Buna Head Football Coach Bradley Morgan. " Anthony Smith led the Cougars with 207 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Also, Justin Carrell rushed for 132 yards on six carries and three touchdowns. Buna finished the game with 21 first downs to Burkeville's three while outgaining them on the ground 471 to 58. Buna led 21-0 after the first quarter of play and doubled that in the second quarter to assume a 42-0 lead at the end of the first half. In fact, the halftime break was extended due to the field having to be used for a LifeFlight landing pad due a bad accident. While the Burkeville game moved Buna to 2-0 on the season, Morgan believes the mood for the season was set last week when the Coogs defeated Orangefield to open the year. "That was a really big win for us," Morgan said. "In the last six years we have split six meetings and it has always been that way for the past 20 years. We went into it expecting a tough game and I think at the end we executed better than they did." Morgan said he is pleased with the way his team is playing right now. "We are going to be tested this week against Tarkington and I know we are going to have to play," Morgan said. "I think we can still improve as long as the kids are willing to improve. "They have to realize they are going to have to get better to win a playoff game or beat East Chambers and win our district," Morgan said. "There are still some things we are not doing perfect." |
