City steps up when needed for shelter

It has been rumored and discussed for many years now but with a single motion and unanimous agreement, the city of Jasper is finally getting an animal shelter.

Maybe.

Earlier this year, the city and Jasper County finally agreed to fund an equal portion of the shelter but neither wanted ownership of the building.

Joe Lanier of the Jasper Lakes Area Humane Society addressed Jasper's council Monday evening asking for the city to take ownership of the project. The city's staff recommended against the measure citing a lack of an interlocal agreement with the county for continual funding.

City staff fears the county will pull its funding of the project in a future year and leave the city holding the leashes on the shelter.

Even in the face of that threat, Councilwoman Diane Pace stepped up and made a motion for the city to take ownership of the shelter and fund it as well. It was seconded by Councilman Tommy Adams and approved unanimously.

Animals have long been mistreated in this county and forgotten. Jasper's city council made sure that is not the case anymore.

Just when the discussion appeared headed towards a denial of the shelter, Jasper's council stood their ground and took a firm step forward in taking care of a need in this community.

The county and city worked together on this project to provide this area an animal shelter that this community needs and deserves.

Roses go to….

Thorns go to….

t To all those who put .50 cents in a newspaper machine and grab a handful of papers. It's a crime. No matter how you look at it, it's theft. You should be ashamed of your actions.
