Morgan knows hot start means nothing now that district's here With the start of District 22- 2A this week, Buna Head Football Coach Stanley Morgan knows his team needs to concentrate on the task at hand this coming week in Anahuac. So far this year, the Cougars have ran through non-district schedule en route to a sterling 4- 0 record. In all four games, Buna has posted double-digit victories and that worries the longtime Buna coach. "We try to keep them grounded and we talk to them constantly about working hard in practice and that not all our games are going to be like this," Morgan said. "There are going to be games coming up when we will be up by a touchdown or down by a touchdown. What kind of character and toughness will you show then when it's a close football game." Morgan knows the majority of this team has players from last year's squad that faced tougher contests and made it through them. "We came from behind in a couple of games last year to win so going on that I believe we will still be that kind of a football team," Morgan said. "But you still have that question in your mind because we have been winning so handily that it will be a shock to the team to have to play for four quarters to win a football game." Morgan said he believed Buna would compete for the district title this year but he admits he is slightly surprised at the offensive scheme this year. "I didn't know offensively we would be this explosive," Morgan said. "We have been a ground it out, three yards and a cloud of dust team and now we have three, four kids that can bust one at any time." So this year's Coogs have transformed into a team that can reel off a 60-yard touchdown run and an extra point. Morgan also credited his place-kicker for a great start to the season. Senior Kyle Clark is 25-for-27 in extra point attempts this year. "We now have confidence in him and in the past we struggled making them and that can make a difference in a close game," Morgan said. Remarkable is the fact that the Cougars have already scored 27 touchdowns in just four contests. Some teams don't score that many in a season. In Morgan's 22 years at Buna, he doesn't remember a football squad starting the year 4-0. "We have been having record crowds at the football games every week - it's like homecoming every week," Morgan said. "I think the word is getting out that we have been pretty successful." |
