See story Page 10A.
Fall Fest begins with a parade Thursday, Oct. 4, 5:30 p.m. around the courthouse square in Jasper. Judging begins at 5:15 p.m. The theme this year is Harvest Moon.

Entry forms and rules are available at the Jasper/Lake Sam Rayburn Area Chamber of Commerce at 246 E. Milam St., or call 384-2762.

You can't miss all the activity around the courthouse square all day Saturday, Oct. 6. Fall Fest includes more than 100 vendors and food booths; a street full of kids' activities, a train ride, a petting zoo and pet adoptions; and live country music in the gazebo.

Photo contest

The East Texas Photography Club will exhibit all the contest entries in the Gallery Square building on Lamar. Judges have selected winners in several categories, but you can still vote for the People's Choice award.

Rockhounds

The Pine Country Gem and Mineral Society will hold an open house during Fall Fest to celebrate the successful remodeling of a building donated to the club by the Tonahill family. The front of the building is now their meeting room and houses displays of rocks and minerals.

Several club members will be on hand to discuss various methods of polishing stones and to demonstrate beading techniques.

Eventually club members hope to remodel the back room as a classroom and workshop. The clubhouse is at 110 N. Zavalla, one block east of the courthouse square.

Art League

The East Texas Art League is holding a membership drive at 364 N. Austin, two blocks north of the courthouse square. Art league president Tina Barrow said there will be drawings for prizes and membership incentives for joining during Fall Fest.

She also announced the grand opening of the art league shop, which features jewelry, prints and original paintings, crafts and unique gifts by local artists.

Artist Margo Rolls' onewoman show will continue through Oct. 20.

Water Street

There are several attractions on Water Street that are worth the walk one block south of the courthouse.

The Fire Hall will be open for the big annual book sale that benefits the library fund. For the most part, these are not used library books- they are good, hardbound books and collections donated by book lovers, as well as magazines, children's books, books on tape, CDs and DVDs, all priced from 10 cents to a dollar.

The Fire Hall also has an antique fire truck on view, and the Littlest Fireman statue in front, ready to pose for pictures.

The Jasper Library itself is worth a stop to view the doll collection on loan from a local family.

The historic Beaty-Orton home will be open for free tours.

Museums

The Jasper County Historical Museum at the corner of Main and Lamar is still under reconstruction, but they hope to have a display to show where they are headed with this project.

The Old County Jail that houses archives of early Jasper will be open.
