4-H plans centennial projects

The Texas Legislature has proclaimed the year beginning Sept. 1, 2007 through Aug. 31, 2008 as the Centennial Anniversary Year of 4-H in Texas.

This is also National 4- H Week, Oct. 1-7.

4-H counts its history from when Tom Marks, a county extension agent in Jack County, organized the first Boys Corn Club.

Four years later, the first Girls Tomato Club was founded by Edna Trigg in Milam County.

From those roots grew 4-H as it is today, a national organization with more than six million youths and more than six million adult volunteers.

4-H projects range from the traditional animal husbandry and agriculture to fashion, community service, and leadership development.

This year, the Jasper Community 4-Hers are taking on a soils project, holding photography classes, organizing the shooting sports training, and signing up for the animals they will raise and show.

For more information on 4-H in Jasper, call Dru or Jimmy Miller at 384- 9900, or your county extension office, 384-3721.
