Barrows leads Jasper to second place CC finish
By GEORGIA PURDY Newsboy Correspondent

Jasper junior varsity runner Matthew Barrows led his team to a second place trophy at Huntington's cross country meet Saturday. Barrows also finished second with a time of 19.43. He has been the JV team leader at all three of Jasper's outings this season.

Times are available but Huntington had not released individual places at press time.

The JV team consisted of Seth Bevil with a time of 20.08, followed by Josephy Cheatham, 21.57; DJ Jackson, 22.04; and Shun-Marcus Preston, 22.18

Varsity boys finished in seventh place with leader Zach Riggins at 17.08. Adam James ran 18.59 which Coach Terry Young said was slow for him. He was followed by Robert Adams, 18.22; David Cleveland, who had cramps early in the run, 21.47; and Jaren Bronson, 22.09.

Riggins has been Jasper's top runner in the varsity division in all previous competition this season.

"This was a good meet- good competition," Young said. "All of those teams in the Lufkin area are good so the times were fast."

Girls varsity finished eighth. Lauren Morgan ran a 14.20, followed by Allison Collins, 14.40; Hannah Vickers, 17.16; Harlena Hadnot, 18.17; and Teneshia Hadnot, 19.52.

"Some of our girls were absent so we were without Charlotte O'Brien, Kelsey Walker, and Natalie Dufner", Young said.

The junior high boys placed sixth; the girls did not have a team but did take four runners.

"Unfortunately, we will probably have to scratch next week's meet at Hudson because all of our seniors are taking the ACT," Young said. "We didn't realize that when we set up the schedule. I hate that we won't be able to run because we need the competition in order to get ready for district. Everything we do is to get better for the district meet. We will compete at Lufkin on Oct. 13, and then district is Oct. 24."
