Jasper picks up win over WO-S in volleyball

The Jasper Lady Bulldogs picked up their first district win Saturday, defeating West Orange- Stark 25-21, 25-18 and 25- 18. Individual stats are not available.

Junior varsity did not play Saturday; however, they split for the week, with a win over Kirbyville Friday and a three-game loss to Hamshire-Fannett Tuesday, Sept. 25.

After a 25-21 loss to Hamshire-Fannett in game one, JV got behind 17-3 in game two but made a turnaround mid-game and brought the score to a onepoint difference. At 24-22, Michelle Wallace drove a solid hit to the floor that could not be played and the Young Lady 'Dogs took over the serve with a chance win. Jasper's serve was a net ball, giving HF the 25-22 win.

"It was a good turnaround," said Coach Shareba Smith, "but you have to be ready to play the minute you step on the court."

Michelle Wallace was top server in both games with 17 good serves against Kirbyville and eight in the Hamshire- Fannett game. Courtney Baker was to hitter in both, 14 and 7.

Varsity lost to both Hamshire-Fannett and Kirbyville, giving up games of 25-15, 25-22, and 25-19 against the Lady Horns Tuesday night.

Jasper's high sets gave the opposition extra seconds to get in place and a number of bad passes and missed blocks told the rest of the story.

"Hamshire-Fannett wasn't really an outstanding team," Coach Casey Murphy said. "Our own mistakes lost the game."

Keyna Mason was highpoint server with nine. D'Aundrea Spikes and Amber Grant had eight spikes and Spikes has 15 digs.

Jasper met the Lady Cats Friday night for the second time in district play. They lost the first two games 25-17 and 25-18, then picked up a 25-21 win before losing game four 25- 20.

"Again, our mistakes were our downfall," Murphy said. "Kirbyville didn't send anything over the net that we couldn't handle. We just couldn't get it together."

Janice Shelby and Shay Adams tied with 12 good serves each. Amber Grant and Janice Shelby had 16 spikes each, and Shalethia had 27 digs.

Both games are out of town this week. Jasper will not play again on the home court until Oct. 12 against Bridge City.
