4-1
Eagles roll past Horns
By JIMMY GALVAN Managing Editor

According to Woodville Head Football Coach Steve Fentress, the Eagles put together their most complete game of the year in Tarkington last Friday night in dismantling the Longhorns 49-13.

"We played a much better game this. We actually played a full four quarters," Fentress said. "We scored first and after that the game just took shape for us and the kids played hard and came focused and ready to play football.

"We have not played a good first quarter in any of our games this year and we came out and played good football last Friday night," Fentress said.

"They never really had a lot of time to throw the football," Fentress said. "Overall, it was a good football game for us. They weren't real good but when you play those teams, you are supposed to beat them like that and we did. You worry when you barely beat them."

Woodville now stands at 4-1 on the season and Fentress said his team is right where he believed they would be with district play on the horizon.

"I knew we were better than the teams we were playing," Fentress said. "On paper, we should have beat these last four opponents and we did. I didn't know we would beat them like we have.

"In the back of my mind, I think we would be 5-0 but I will take 4-1 right now," Fentress said. "We are playing disciplined football right now."

He said that discipline came through during the Tarkington game when the contest grew chippy with late hits and personal foul penalties against the Longhorns.

"Our kids stayed on the sideline and showed class and didn't join in the bad aspect of the game," Fentress said. "And that's a big thing for me. We are playing good discipline football and now showing our backside and stooping down to that team's level."

This week, the Eagles are off with a bye week before the start of district play. After losing the opening week to Coldspring, Woodville has reeled off four straight wins but Fentress sees the bye week as a positive for Woodville.

"I think it will be good for us," Fentress said. "We have been going hard since Aug. 6 and we plan on getting better at the little things this week. These are the things you don't have the opportunity to work on when you are playing every week."

And starting Oct. 12 when the Eagles host Shelbyville in the start of district play, all records go out the window and everyone starts out even.

"They understand that we are all even when district begins," Fentress said. "Even the teams that are 5-0 are even with us. They are a mature bunch of kids so I think they know that and they are probably going to hear that from the coaches as well."
