StarQuest winner to open Jasper Rodeo The winner of the Jasper Lions Club first annual Star Quest Country Music Competition Oct. 13 at the Lions Rodeo Arena will receive a contract to perform as the opening act at the 62nd annual Jasper Lions Cub Benefit Rodeo in May 2008. The Lions Club created the event to promote upand coming country singers from the region. The competition showcases eight finalists: Matt Moody of Woodville, Bobby VanVeckhoven of Burkeville, Leslye McGallon of Houston, David Lavender of Kirbyville, Deniece VanVeckhoven of Kirbyville, Kenneth L. Webb of Hemphill, Vanessa E. of Silsbee, and C.J. Garsee of Buna. Master of ceremonies Lowell Nunnally, a radio hall of fame DJ, said events like the Lions' Star Quest "are a must to building confidence and stage presence. You must perform before an audience, not just one, but many times to find success. "Every country star performing today started on a stage like the one at the Jasper Lions rodeo arena. You can never get to Nashville without paying your dues." Each finalist will sing two songs. Judges will select three show finalists, who will perform one additional song before a winner is announced. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. Tickets for adults are $10 and $2 for children under 12. Concession stands will be open for food and beverage. |
