Dawgs run past Orangefield 24-14
Bailey directs Jasper to first district victory

Jasper Head Football Coach Thomas Brooks said all last week that the Bulldogs faced a must-win situation in Orangefield Friday.

The Bulldogs did what needed to be done as Jasper raced out to a 24-0 halftime lead and held off the Bobcats for a 24-14 victory last Friday, Oct. 5.

"It was a big win for us because it kept us in the playoff hunt," Brooks said. "As long as you are in the playoff hunt, it gives you something to shoot for and not just playing for pride.

"It's a lot easier to get up for practice and work hard and keep the kids together when you are still in the playoff hunt," Brooks said. "The win was very important especially after coming off two tough losses and hopefully it will give us some momentum."

Brooks inserted sophomore Dominique Bailey into the quarterback position and the super sophomore did the rest. Bailey rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns in pacing a strong ground attack against the overmatched Bobcats.

"We talked about it as a staff. We know he's a good athlete and why not let him touch the ball every play," Brooks said. "We wanted to see what he could do and he showed it."

After Orangefield went three and out on their first possession of the night, Jasper lit up the scoreboard on their first possession. Starting from their own 47- yard line, Jasper only took three plays to reach the end zone for the first score of the night.

Bailey executed the first of many quarterback draws on the night and scampered through and around Orangefield defenders for a 48-yard touchdown run. A following PAT by the returning David Beck gave Jasper a quick 7-0 lead with 8:50 left in the first quarter.

Orangefield went three and out and Jasper again took the ball drove down the field against a porous Bobcat defense. But the drive stalled when Bailey's fourth-down pass was intercepted by Orangefield's Devin Green at the Bobcat four-yard line to halt the drive.

The Bobcats were finally able to move the ball against Jasper on their next drive but a fumble stopped the drive and gave the ball to Jasper at their own 44-yard line. The Dawgs and Bailey would make Orangefield pay for the miscue.

Two straight Bailey pass completions left Jasper with a fourth and one call from the Orangefield 47. Senior Malcolm Bronson, who saw time in the Jasper offensive backfield this game, gained the first down with a nineyard jaunt down to the Bobcat 36.

"Bronson gives us another athlete in the backfield who needs to touch the football," Brooks said. "At receiver, a defense can take him out of your offense but at running back, they can't stop him because we can hand the football to him. He's an aggressive type runner and we need that in the backfield."

Bailey capped off the eight-play drive when he scampered in from 16 yards out. The score, with a twopoint conversion pass from Beck to Cornelius Gillis, gave Jasper a 15-0 lead with 6:53 left in the second quarter.

While Orangefield's offense was sputtering in the first half against a tough Dawg defense, the Bulldogs were still moving the ball consistently in the first half. On their next drive, Jasper used the running talents of Bronson as he churned up the ground for 43 yard to move down to the Orangefield seven. A Bailey draw play gained only two yards and following pass incompletion left the Bulldogs with fourthand goal call from the fiveyard line.

The return of senior Beck was illustrated as Jasper was able to attempt a field goal on the fourth down call instead of having to score. Beck came through with a 23-yard field goal to pad Jasper's lead to 18-0 at the 2:54 mark of the second quarter.

If Orangefield thought Jasper was through scoring in the first half, the Bobcats were sadly mistaken as the Dawgs stopped Orangefield's next possession on three plays and started on another scoring drive.

The drive was set up by a Jeremy Granger fumble that was recovered by William Brooks at the Bobcat 26 yard line with 2:09 left in the first half. Three plays later, Jasper lit up the scoreboard again.

Again, Bailey found the end zone by calling his own number on a quarterback draw as the talented sophomore continued his strong debut as quarterback as he scored from 20 yards out. After the PAT was blocked, Jasper held to a commanding 24-0 first-half lead.

Orangefield's offense finally awoke in the second half as the Bobcats were able to put 14 points on the board while Jasper's offense was plagued by penalties and turnovers.

Brooks pointed out that Orangefield made some offensive adjustments at the half and showed a new wrinkle in the second half.

Midway through the third quarter, the Bobcats were finally able to reach the scoreboard when they put together an 11-play, 67-yard drive. Orangefield used the running of Granger and Helton to move down the field. Two key runs on the drive were a fourth-down conversion by Granger and a 32-yard run by Helton to set the stage for the score.

Orangefield, who was shut out by Silsbee last week, scored their first district points of the year when Helton scored from three yards out on a fourth and goal call. The score, with the PAT by Derrick Evans, pulled Orangefield to within 24-7 at the 2:01 mark of the third quarter.

Jasper moved the ball against Orangefield in the second half but was unable to put any more points on the board. A crucial turnover late in the contest allowed the Bobcats to take a sniff as possibly pulling the victory away from Jasper.

After stopping a late fourth-quarter drive on three plays, Orangefield's Jared Hutchison jumped on a loose punt, which was muffed by Bronson. One play later, Helton connected with a streaking Jace Statum down the right sideline for a 66- yard scoring strike with 1:32 left in the contest.

The score, with Evans' PAT, pulled the Bobcats within 24-14.

Brooks said he didn't mind Bronson taking a chance on the punt and applauded the senior's attempt to make a big play for the Dawgs.

"If he picks it up and runs it in, then you are talking about his great play," Brooks said. "He will make those plays and I rather would have a guy like that who will be aggressive and not afraid to make plays."

Orangefield continued to hold onto a hope for a miracle comeback when the Bobcats executed a perfect onsides kick. Orangefield's Evans jumped on the loose ball at the Bobcat 48 with 1:32 left in the game.

But Jasper's defense stepped up and thwarted any dream of a comeback. Helton was sacked on consecutive plays by Dante Rollins and Raymond Hafford and Helton's final desperation pass was intercepted by Bronson with 19 seconds left in the game. By the numbers
