Walking the halls
By KEVIN MCCUGH Principal of Jasper High School

The faculty, staff, and students at Jasper High School have worked diligently in their efforts to start school in a positive manner. The first six weeks of school have been completed, and we are striving to continue the process of providing educational opportunities for all students.

The previous week was very busy on campus, with the excitement of homecoming festivities culminating with the ceremonies and game last Friday night. Thanks to all of the students, parents, teachers, and staff members in the district who assisted in the preparations. The hallways of the campus were decorated to celebrate the theme of "Treasure Island." Special thanks go out to Jamie White and members of the JHS Student Council for their efforts in organizing this year's homecoming activities, including the hall decorations, homecoming court nominations and voting, and the homecoming dance. Another acknowledgement of appreciation goes to Stanley Johnson, the senior class, and the Jasper Fire Department for their time in coordinating the bonfire, a JHS homecoming tradition.

This past Monday, Oct. 15, teachers and staff participated in the district-wide parent involvement day. We would like to thank the parents and guardians of those students who scheduled conferences with teachers. The communication between teachers and parents/guardians is essential in the process of helping students become successful, and in maintaining those expectations throughout their high school careers. Our parent liaison on the high school campus is Jeff Hicks.

The week of Oct. 22 - 26 is Red Ribbon Week, an event that provides guidance for students in making decisions they are confronted with in their lives. Poster themes on the campus include "Hooked on Books, not Drugs," "Courage is Drug Free," "Heroes are Drug Free," and "I've got Better Things to do than Drugs." Prizes are being awarded for these contests at the high school. One of our counselors, Stacy Gillis, has organized these events for the campus.

Congratulations to five JHS students who advanced to the second round of all - region choir auditions. These students are Jessica Alvis, Marcie Ratcliff, Kelsey Walker, Anthony McCarter, and Quentin Fowler. The choir director is Martin Jones.

We have numerous students involved in UIL academic and athletic programs who work tirelessly with their sponsors and coaches in their pursuit of excellence.

The administrative team at JHS requests that parents/guardians not bring food to students at school from area restaurants during the school day and that our dual credit students not bring food from area restaurants back to the high school campus during the school day. Senate Bill legislation mandates this policy be followed by all public schools in Texas.

Also, parents and students need to avoid driving in the back parking lot by the gymnasium during times when our buses load and unload students. This is to ensure the safety of all JHS students, faculty, staff, and guests.

Thanks to the community for your support as we continue with our mission of providing a quality education to every student at Jasper High School.
