Newton holds off late charge for district win Newton scored late and held off a late Corrigan- Camden threat to claim a 24-20 victory over the Bulldogs in the District 23- 2A opener. "We made a lot of mistakes but we were able to win," said Newton Head Football Coach Curtis Barbay. Newton amassed 14 penalties in the games and fumbled the ball six times, losing three to the Bulldogs. "That kept Corrigan in the game," Barbay said. "They're a good team but we moved the ball good against them." Newton's offensive machine averaged seven yards per carry during the contest. "We moved it good but then we would fumble it," Barbay said. Quarterback Nick Adams hit on five-of-seven for 109 yards and a touchdown. Adams also rushed for 42 yards. Justin McLemore led Newton with 113 yards while James Burch rushed for 73 yards. Defensively, Newton held Corrigan-Camden in check most of the night. Barbay said the Bulldogs only managed two big pass plays to keep CC in the contest. In fact, the Bulldogs leading rusher only collected 37 yards against a tough Eagle defense. But as time was ticking away, Corrigan-Camden was able to move the ball down to the Newton 15 but the Eagles kept the Bulldogs out of the end zone. Newton was then able to run the clock out and claim the vital district victory. Newton will continue on their road trip this week when they travel to take Shelbyville. "They look better than they were," Barbay said. "Coaches over there have them playing hard." Barbay believes his teams need to start peaking during district play but he said his squad fell back with the turnovers in the district opener. "I don't think we stepped backwards, I think we are getting better each week," Barbay. "We just have to take care of the ball." |
