Dawgs turn back Hamshire-Fannett
Potent offense, defense key win over Horns

Fresh off their stunning victory over the Silsbee Tigers, the Hamshire- Fannett Longhorns were eyeing a chance at competing for a District 21-3Aplayoff berth coming into their Friday night matchup with Jasper.

Unfortunately for the Longhorns, Jasper's Dominique Bailey continued his strong showing at the quarterback position as the sophomore led the Bulldogs to a convincing 37-16 victory over the Horns in Hamshire.

"Going into the ballgame, we knew it was a pivotal game for us because it was a good opponent and we had to win that ballgame to keep on our way to making the playoffs," said Jasper Head Football Coach Thomas Brooks. "If we don't win that game, then the rest of the games wouldn't have mattered because they would have had an advantage over us in a tiebreaker.

"We knew we had to have this ballgame and they came out and performed well," Brooks said.

But while Bailey was key to the offensive explosion for Jasper, it was the defensive squad that drove home the message that Jasper was back in the district playoff race and ready for a showdown this Friday with district leader West Orange- Stark.

Jasper limited H-F's attack throughout the first half, but it was a defensive stand in the second quarter that put a stamp on the game for Jasper. Jasper was leading 12-7 midway through the quarter when a punt by Hamshire- Fannett's Dustin East buried the Dawgs back at their own five-yard line.

Jasper offense, which was potent most of the night, was stopped on three plays and the Bulldogs had to punt the ball back over to the Longhorns. H-F's Hagen Daigle gave the Longhorns prime position when he fielded a short Derrick Day punt and returned to the Jasper 21 with 7:37 left in the second quarter.

Two straight running plays failed to move the ball and when H-F's Randall Courville third-down pass fell incomplete, the Horns were forced to attempt a 37- yard field goal by Blake Tiner. When Tiner's attempt went wide left, Jasper had held off the scoring attempt by the Horns and took the wind out of the sails of the Hamshire- Fannett homecoming fans.

"Our defense has been playing well all season," Brooks said. "Our offense is getting a lot of talk right now but our defense has really been doing well. As long as we continue doing that and get the ball back to our offense, then I think we will be in good shape.

Jasper grabbed a quick 6-0 lead on their first drive of the night when the Dawgs drove 98 yards on 10 plays after Hamshire-Fannett went three and out on their first possession. Two penalties moved Jasper back to the two-yard line but that only provided extra yardage for the Dawgs to maneuver under Bailey's direction.

Slowly, Jasper started moving down the field behind Bailey.

In third week at the starting quarterback position, Bailey has settled into the position and now has become a threat throwing the ball as well. Bailey connected on two key pass plays during the drive and finished off the scoring drive by scoring from 24 yards out with 4:49 left in the first quarter. A missed PAT left Jasper with a 6-0 lead.

Hamshire-Fannett appeared ready to make the game a shootout when they took their ensuing drive and lit up the scoreboard for their fans. After their running game was stuffed on their first drive, H-F went to the air and Courville moved the ball down the field against Jasper's pass defense.

Faced with a third-and-11 from their own 43, Courville found Chris Smith on the left sideline for a 57-yard scoring toss. Smith got away from a Jasper defender and eased his way into the end zone. With Smith's PAT, Hamshire- Fannett grabbed what would prove to be their only lead on the night at 7-6 with 2:37 left in the first quarter.

"This win lets us know that we can play with the good ball clubs," Brooks said. "We should have won this game by a bigger margin because we had many plays called back because of penalties.

"The kids never let the penalties bother them," Brooks said. "I was surprised at their focus because a lot of teams would get frustrated, especially in an important game. But they never worried about it."

But Jasper and Bailey responded to the challenge and quickly reclaimed the lead for good for the Dawgs.

Starting from the Jasper 37, Bailey directed the Dogs on a five-play scoring drive. Bailey did most of the work as he quickly took off on a 50-yard run down to the Longhorn 13. The drive appeared ready to stall two plays later as the Dawgs had only moved to the Hamshire 10 and faced a third-and-goal call. But Bailey and Malcolm Bronson rescued the Bulldogs as they connected on a 13-yard scoring connection to give Jasper a 12-7 lead with 35 seconds left in the first quarter.

From their Jasper, started to pad their lead against Hamshire-Fannett.

As the second quarter started to tick down, Jasper pushed their lead out to 18-7 when Malcolm Bronson scored from a yard out with 1:55 left in the second quarter.

Hamshire-Fannett looked like they might challenge Jasper's defense again. The Longhorns drove down to the Jasper 24 with seconds left in the first half but the drive ended when Courville was intercepted by Ryan Bronson to end the first half.

Jasper wasted no time in the second half putting the game on ice.

Jasper scored two touchdowns on five plays to pad their lead out to a commanding 30-10 lead early in the third quarter. Jasper's first score came via a 31-yard score by Bailey at the 10:39 mark of the third quarter and a 24-7 lead.

Hamshire-Fannett responded to Jasper's score with a Tiner 30-yard field goal with 6:06 left in the third but Jasper came right back three plays later to light up the scoreboard again.

The Bailey-to-Malcolm Bronson connection did the honors again on a nifty pass play to Bronson out of the backfield. Bailey lofted a perfect pass to a streaking Bronson on the left sideline for an easy 48-yard score and a 30-10 lead with 5:43 left in the third quarter.

Jasper scored their final score of the night in the fourth quarter when Bailey passed to Ryan Bronson for a 10-yard touchdown with 9:35 left in the fourth quarter.

Hamshire-Fannett scored a meaningless touchdown midway in the fourth quarter when Daigle scored from a yard out at the 4:51 mark of the fourth quarter.

DAWG NOTES: Injuries continued to plague Jasper's offensive line as senior Raymond Hafford went down with an ankle injury in the first half.

Hafford joins senior Christian Goff on the sidelines and both are listed as questionable for this week's contest with WO-S.
