SHHET to begin home in Jasper

Self Help Housing of East Texas will hold a groundbreaking ceremony at 127 Birch St. in Jasper Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 11 a.m.

"SHHET provides grants to lower income families who provide more than half of the labor to build their own homes," according to board member Joe Miller Jr. of Newton. "This 'sweat equity' significantly reduces the purchase price."

SHHET receives funds from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) Mutual Self-Help Housing Program, and they are working on getting funding from other sources to help additional Hurricane Rita victims rehabilitate their homes or build new ones.SHHET held a construction orientation meeting Oct. 22 for three clients who expect to begin building within the next couple of weeks.
